Mexico 9th place in international tourist visitors

Mexico celebrates the second preferred destination by international tourists in the American continent and the ninth in the world. Figures from the World Tourism Organization (WTO)

According to its website “The World Tourism Organization is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability, and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.”

France was the #1 country by international tourist arrivals. In 2015, France was visited by 84.5 million visitors.

In second place was the United States, receiving 77.5 million visitors. In third place was Spain, receiving 68.2 international visitors, followed by China at #4 with 56.9 million visitors. Italy was #5 with 50.7 million visitors, followed by Turkey at #6 with 39.5 million visitors, Germany at #7 with 35 million visitors, and the UK in 8th place with 34.4 million international visitors.

Mexico was #9, meaning it had more international visitors than every country in the world with the exception of the top 8 mentioned above.

In 2016, Mexico had 34 million international visitors. That was an increase from the 2014 figure, which was 29.3 million international visitors, and it was 10 million more visitors than arrived to Mexico in 2005.

The restaurants, bars and nightclubs were the activities that generated the most jobs with 827 964, which is equivalent to 36.0 percent of the total of the employment, in 2015.

This is followed by passenger transport with 16.2 percent, tourist trade with 10.6 percent, crafts production with 9.6 percent, accommodation with 6.2 percent, and the remaining jobs in miscellaneous areas.

Mexico has a great diversification of destinations, between cultural, colonial, history, shopping and people who wish to spend their retirement in the state. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) anticipates growth in international tourist arrivals by 2030 to reach of 1.8 billion.
