The city that has seen more growth is neither an industrial city, nor the capital of the country… It’s by the ocean. Yes, it’s Playa del Carmen. The population increases over 15.8% annually and it has been happening for past 8 years thanks to the tourism explosion. Around 30 thousand people arrived to playa looking for employment and business opportunities.
Among the cities with more growth you can find Tijuana (North Baja California), San Cristobal del las Casas (Chiapas) and San José del Cabo (South Baja California). These cities have also an above the average economic situation. Nowadays places with factories or tourism are more popular than the capital of the country.
Other cities like Tlaxcala, Leon and Puebla are also popular due to their closeness to Mexico City and represent a great alternative to the gigantic capital of this country. However, Mexico City and its metropolitan area aren’t shrinking at all with a steady .8% annual growth.
Playa Del Carmen’s government has invested 400 million pesos in infrastructure, in an effort to improve public services and encourage migration to this city.
