According to Miguel Torruco Marqués, the Secretary of Tourism for the Mexican Government, the Tren Maya will boost tourist flow, economic impact, and per capita spending. This is due to the wide variety of tourist activities that will be available along the train route.
The Secretary of Tourism oversees the Ordinary Sessions of the Technical Committee of the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur). These sessions closely monitor the progress of the Tren Maya project.
The tours that will be offered starting in December 2023 were developed through consultation with travel agents, guides, and tourism officials from the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. These tours optimize the use of existing infrastructure, products, and tourism services in 40 municipalities and 181 localities. Additionally, six Tren Maya hotels will be built in different locations along the route.
A catalog of 117 cultural and nature tourism attractions and complementary destinations has been created to highlight points of interest for stays of one to three nights in the area around each Tren Maya station. The train will traverse the states of Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche, Chiapas, and Tabasco.

Activities have been established for each station, so national and international tourists can enjoy the experience of traveling on the Tren Maya and visiting various sites and tourist attractions along the route. These include 14 Magical Towns, 6 World Heritage Sites, 18 Indigenous Paradises, 50 archaeological zones, and 29 complementary destinations or localities.
To make use of existing infrastructure and enhance current options for segments such as Meetings Tourism, Romance, Health and Wellness, and Retirement, the catalog suggests that 44 of the 64 travel options can enrich the current offerings.
The proposal, designed with the advice of Chef Jorge Orozco, includes over 30 unique dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Examples include chipilin tamales, motuleño eggs, panuchos, cochinita pibil, tzic de venado, sopa de lima, queso relleno, and papadzules. Additionally, there are more than 10 desserts, such as traditional marquesitas, artisanal chocolates, chocolate coconut candy, and, of course, typical beverages of the region such as coffee, pozol, chaya tea, pitahaya and lime waters, xtabentún, mistela, the Riviera Maya cocktail, and must-tries like tequila, mezcal, wine, pulque, and artisanal beers.
Finally, the Secretary of Tourism emphasized that the Tren Maya is the most significant tourism project in 60 years and provides an opportunity to increase economic impact and per capita spending for tourists in the southeastern region of Mexico during their stay.
