Cultural Festival of the Caribbean Brings New Life to Playa del Carmen

Festival of Caribbean Culture Playa del CarmenResidents of Playa Del Carmen enjoyed a spectacular display of culture as the International Festival of Caribbean Culture (FECUCA) made its stop there on December 10th. Locals and visitors alike had the opportunity to see the beautiful displays of art, music, and theater that were showcased by many talented individuals. Many Caribbean cultures were represented, including Mayan and Mexican. Lectures, workshops, and panel discussions that related to Caribbean culture were also incorporated into the festival.

This year’s focus also included contemporary Caribbean art in addition to the traditional Caribbean art forms.

“In addition to the more traditional forms of Caribbean culture, we emphasize the high quality and variety of artists who excel in the various disciplines of contemporary art in the international scene,” their official website states.

The FECUCA was created in 1988 and ran through the year 2000, then it was revived in 2011 by Governor Roberto Borge Angulo. Their vision is to represent the beautiful diversity of the many cultures and rich history that contribute to the Caribbean culture through the festival.

Caribbean Culture performers Playa del Carmen“The Festival of Caribbean Culture, presented by the Government of Quintana Roo through the Department of Culture, in coordination with the National Council for Culture and the Arts, seeks to reclaim what is proper in this polychrome and multicultural region of the country,” the website states,

“…Where not only the splendor of the ruins of the great Mayan culture, but also a unique identity in Mexico as we breathe, is transmitted and lives with music, dances, traditions, gastronomy and natural environment that converge make Quintana Roo Mexico the door to the Caribbean, as well as the place to present to the international community the values ​​of our Caribbean identity space.”

Residents of Playa Del Carmen can enjoy this annual festival as well as other wonderful celebrations of art, music, theater, and history. The Caribbean is an area rich with heritage and beauty, and the people who live in this area will be able to enjoy it in a way that visitors can only sample.
